It's Autumn...
...I say, begrudgingly holed up in blanket pining for sunlight through my window.
It is with the utmost dread that I write this post— my Autumn playlist post. I feel like we barely had a summer, and the fact that half the trees are orange causes a pain in my heart like no other. I wish I could be a Taylor Swift fall gal, but it’s just not in my make up. If there’s one thing being from California did to (or, for) me, it’s making me completely intolerant to the cold. Yes, the leaves are pretty, sure I love a nice hazelnut coffee, and of course I love an excuse to crush a one-hour bath every single night but the THINGS I have to DO in order to get comfortable! I recently fell into a comfortable rhythm to keep myself healthy and sane in this weather, and I will dedicate another post entirely to that, (lotions, oils, face creams, etc). For now, we will carry on, bidding adieu to the warmth, the UV rays, and the outdoor dining in yards. Goodbye to the sweet summer birds, the 5 AM joyful wakeup, the lack of clothing and being shoeless, and we turn our attention to the good things…mainly the somber, ethereal music that I like to surround myself with. It genuinely is one of the only things I look forward in the fall. That and pulling out my old edition of Brideshead Revisited and either rereading it or finding my favorite parts and trying to memorize the lines. Speaking of which, have you watched the trailer for the movie Saltburn? It’s a take on Brideshead with Jacob Elordi and Barry Keough, and I have probably watched it 47 times and my guess is I’ll probably see it in theaters at least three times.
First, let us salute the veterans that has carried this theme since around 2010, it wouldn’t feel right to leave them out.
First and foremost one of the best collabs and videos in our lifetime (aka this came out when my brain was still developing so it is engrained in me for the rest of my life) I Blame Coco & Robyn, and this one— remember how obsessed we all were with Wildfox Couture? And then they dropped this bad boy video and nobody could ever find the song again? It’s Witchcraft
So without further ado, it is time to finally listen to the sounds of Autumn.
New additions include the “Final Fantasy” remix to “Your Ex-Lover is Dead” which took long enough to add to Spotify, new James Blake tracks from his newest album (which was good! I got excited! I feel like he’s ‘back’ in the pretentious annoying fan girl way. Everyone loved him for his dubstep and it was annoying that he strayed so far. I’m glad he’s come back to his roots and made them moody.) Listen to the album if you haven’t yet, the visuals rule, too.
And one more highlight from the new additions— which is Phoebe Bridgers version of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters”. I will genuinely say I think this is up there with one of this decades greatest covers. I don’t think anything will top Mr. Little Jeans’ version of “Suburbs”, but this is giving it a run for its money. It sends chills all over my body at the 3 minute mark, and not to sound dramatic but tears do fill my eyes. It makes me sulky and sad and moody and want to walk barefoot in the snow. It brings images of Ophelia floating down the river with her bouquet, crows flocking over a dried out field, a woman sobbing in a bathtub. So all in all, it’s a perfect fall track.
